It's been an amazing few weeks touring the west coast with MC Frontalot and making an album with We Is Shore Dedicated.  The shows in Seattle, Portland and S.F. were especially fun, and we had large and enthusiastic crowds almost everywhere we went. I felt like we got into a great space musically and could feel that progression of the set getting tighter as the tour went on. I'm grateful to Remo, Hendrix Drums and Drum Dots for providing crucial gear support to make this run even more enjoyable. It's always challenging to play these types of shows on an unfamiliar rig, but having my snare, cymbals, and preferred drum heads and dampeners along helped me feel comfortable right away. One of the highlights of the trip was a one-hour interview and performance at Google Headquarters in L.A. for their 'Google Talks" series They could not have been more friendly and accommodating, and I can't wait to hear the final product.

Besides the shows, we ate burritos in Berkeley, drove th...

I'm excited to be hitting the road with hip-hop artist MC Frontalot this summer for a run of West Coast dates!  We'll be in Vegas at The Paris Casino on Aug. 9, then in Seattle, Portland, SF, LA and other cities from 8/28 - 9/7.   Head over to the shows page for the full schedule!  Shaffer The Darklord and Miss Eaves (two very talented rappers) are also on the bill, and I'm really looking forward to seeing all my friends on the left coast.  After we finish, I'll be staying the Bay Area for a few days to record a full-length album with indie-rock band We Is Shore Dedicated.   This is my 5th album with them, and I'll be laying down drumset, percussion, and even some marimba tracks.

It's been a great summer so far, with shows in NYC, upstate, NY, and throughout the east and midwestern US.  I've had the pleasure of supporting some brand new artists recently (Simon Garrett, Anita Aysola, Adam Douglass, Dave Ross), as well as...

Here's some pretty cool stuff to start off 2019!   It's a tremendous honor to be featured in two major music publications this month.  The Downbeat article discusses the process of recording drums from a jazz perspective, while the Modern Drummer blog is essentially a wrap-up of my 2018 with a look ahead to the coming year.   Here are some links:

DownBeat:  Jazz & The Home Studio

Modern Drummer: On the Beat with Rob Mitzner

It's also a privilege to have my picture and biography included on this list of distinguished music department alumni from my alma mater, Brown University.  I got to learn from some amazing teachers and play with many talented musicians during my four years there.  My jazz band director, Matt McGarrell is still at the school and currently planning a 30-year anniversary celebration for the school's jazz program.  I'm hoping I can make it back to Providence to celebrate this accomplishment and see some of my old friends....

After a summer spent mostly away from the city, this fall has marked a sort of renewal as I've spent a lot of time in the studio working on new projects.  I'm particularly excited about my group with Dave Ross and Dmitry Ishenko, which features Dave's songwriting and brilliant guitar playing.  We've been deep in the shed workshopping new material, but here's a sneak peak which was recently featured on Drum Talk TV (the world's top drum video site).

I've also been busy playing shows around the city with singer-songwriter Luke Buck, and am looking forward to finishing some tracks we laid down in the studio over the summer.  Speaking of recordings, Woodhead has 2 new releases coming out, including a full-length album we did at legendary engineer Martin Bisi's studio, and a track on a compilation entitled "NOW New York" on True Groove Records.    I'm also honored to be featured in a sh...

We had an awesome show at Def Con 25 at Caesar's Palace!  Stay tuned for some videos on Drum Talk TV!  I've had a busy summer on the road so far, with shows in Iowa, Colorado and throughout the northeast.  I'm also looking forward to heading out to Mississippi next week with One Stop Pony, which will mark my first time playing in that state.  After a couple days in NYC , I'll also be heading out to LA in early September to play with Craig Taubman.  Check the calendar page for details...more to come!

I'm excited to be premiering a series of play-along videos on Drum Talk TV featuring music from the DrumTrax App library!  It's an honor to be a regular contributor to the world's largest drum video site, and I had a blast stretching out over all these nice grooves and vamps.

SXSW was a blast, and I'm almost recovered from the all the playing, hanging, walking and eating we did in Austin.   I'll be posting some video from the MC Frontalot show at the Karma Lounge, but in the meantime, please enjoy this shot of some delicious BBQ from Green Mesquite...I know I did.  Before the festival, I also made a stop-over in New Orleans for even more playing and hanging.  Both cities are great for live music, and I especially enjoyed my night off in NOLA seeing the Rebirth Brass band at their long-standing residency Uptown at the Maple Leaf Bar.  That is one super-tight horn section, and the bass drummer took no prisoners.

Now that I'm back in NYC, I'll be hitting the studio with a couple projects this week while eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new custom snare from Hendrix Drums.  First, I'll be back at Germano Studios with singer-songwriter Brandon Rosen, and then shooting a video at The Seaside Lo...

It was an honor to be interviewed on the world's most popular drum channel at the NAMM show in Anaheim this year!  Here's the link:

Hello from 30,000 feet!  I’m on my way out to Anaheim for the NAMM show and looking forward to seeing old friends, checking out new gear and enjoying some sunshine and great tacos.  It’s been a fast start to 2018, and I’ve been splitting time between the stage and studio.  I had a great trip to San Antonio last week with rapper MC Frontalot to play the Penny Arcade Expo at the massive downtown convention center.   It had been almost 8 years since I was last in San Antonio, and I had a blast exploring the city with bassist Matt Milligan, who also plays in the band Wheatus.  We meandered across the train tracks to score some coffee in a funky hipster neighborhood, located some authentic tacos (are you sensing a theme?) and then hit up the Alamo before soundcheck (I remembered)!  The show itself had a nice energy, and I can’t wait to share some of my drummer-cam vids which will be premiering on Drum Talk TV soon along with a host of other videos.  I’ve also played shows with Doll Parts, W...

As the end of the year barrels toward us, I'm feeling a bit guilty for my recent neglect of this blog.  It's been an exhausting and immensely rewarding few months, and I'm so thankful to all the people who keep me working and playing every day.  Since October, much of my time has has been spent in the theater doing a couple different shows; first was "Androboros", (America's oldest play), followed by a few performances of "Stu for Silverton" and Marla Mase's "Miracles Lost & Found".   Pit orchestra work can be demanding and grueling, but also highly gratifying and great for the sight-reading chops.  It's been interesting to incorporate a variety of auxiliary percussion into my setup, including triangle (which was a bit of a fetish of Silverton MD Will Reynolds), conch shell, woodblocks, cajon, tambourine, etc.... Beyond the music, I've enjoyed the camaraderie of being a part of a large cast and gotten to meet some very talented musicians and actors....
